I have a 2002 TJ and would like to know the biggest size tires I can install without a lift kit. Thank you

Hi there, welcome to the forum. You should consider a few things when increasing tire size:
Clearance - will they rub suspension components or hit the body when the suspension is compressed?
Driveability - will the combination of your engine type, transmission, axle gear ratio, and increased tire size make the engine struggle due to the tire’s increased leverage on the powertrain?
Braking - are the brakes still up to the task with the tire’s increased leverage?

With all that said, 31” tires will probably be the maximum without opening any of the cans of worms listed above. They may rub the front lower control arms during tight turns, depending on wheel backspacing and tire width.

Fair warning - It is a slippery slope of modifications and exponential expenses.

That's a loaded question, and it might depend on how you plan to use the vehicle.
Without modifications, a larger tire that 'fits' will not necessarily let the vehicle operate as designed.

just to add, what gears do you have? 31s will fit but will suck unless you have 3.73 or 4.10 gears and even then you will need to put a couple washers behind the turn stops.

38s, but only if you install them wearing yoga pants.

Would a Bridgestone Dueler AT rhs 255 70 r18 fit on a stock height 04 TJ?

Looking at some used wheels with this size tire on them which would last a little while.

Thoughts?

That's a true 32" tire so would need at least a 2" spring lift with bump stops if you are going to flex the suspension. For a mall cruiser they would be drivable but be very careful on speed bumps and other common paved road hazards. I'm running 265/70/17 with a 31.6" diameter and haven't had a problem except rubbing at full lock on the steering for paved road driving. Will be adding a 2" spring lift to the 1 1/4' body lift so I can take it off road. Have a similar experience to you that a deal on wheels came along before I was ready to do the suspension work that needs to be done.
