2004 Rubicon 42RLE stuck in second gear

OK, I disconnected the positive cable from the battery, left it off for over an hour, then I went out and checked the ground on both the engine and the chassis. Reconnected the battery and started the jeep. No more engine light and it’s no longer in limp mode and drives just fine. However, I have a new symptom which is when I’m backing up or going forward slowly it’s stalled on me about three times. It restarts immediately so if stalling is the only thing it does, I can live for that until I ultimately fix this problem. What do you guys think? Was this just a glitch or do I need a new PCM… If I do I’m going straight to Mark at Wrangler fix.

Ok, I'd top up your transmission fluid don't worry if you "over fill" it a bit, this trans prefers it...The starting and stalling in my experience could be a couple of things...I had this happen and I was getting cam positioning error codes, a bad cam sensor or a worn OPDA can cause this. The other time it was a faulty fuel pump. I did eventually purchase a PCM from wrangler fix, it did fix the hard shifting and made it smooth at the proper RPMs, I highly recommend replacing your PCM..

Is it stalling like the engine is being bogged down by the transmission? I know you have an automatic but does it stall like you came to a stop with a manual transmission without stepping on the clutch?

Thanks James, thanks Jerry, it has only stalled immediately after reconnecting the battery but I’ve driven it without any issues sense then. I’m going assume it was just a computer glitch that thanks to this post, learned the battery reset hack. But if I have even one more issue w the PCM, I’ll be buying a new one from Mark at Wranglerfix. Thank you all for your help and advice.

Lasted for 2 days but threw an engine light today. Didn’t go into limp mode this time but it was all of the same codes including an additional code (something low voltage). Calling Mark to get a new computer.

I also have a 2005 LJR in limp mode. It happened yesterday. It’s stuck in second gear. Reverse, neutral and park are fine. Here are my codes: P0891-TCM Power relay sense high circuit, P0700-transmission control circuit (MIL Request), P0700 3 times
I just disconnected the positive battery terminal. I’ll let you know what it does. Thank God this didn’t happen during my 1,000 mile trip from Montana to CA.
PCM/TCM P/N P56044 529AC
Module P/N P56044542AH
Module S/N TEH13254A27W
Sequence # 809870

Sadly, same/similar here now with my '05 :-(. the P0700 which I believe is just saying hey buddy there are issues, and then also the P0891-TCM Power relay sense high circuit.

Did you end up going with a new PCM or any other troubleshooting?

Bought it used in December, and it had been leaking ATF when the CEL came up, I garaged it and changed out the fluids and re-sealed everything (no more leaks!) - but cant get out of limp mode and havent been able to determine if its all related to the leak issue OR if its just perfect coincidental timing and truly I just need a new PCM

Looks like i will give the pcm a try... i mean its the only option i have rn, but i wanna know if it didn’t work what else can i do,
I changed the gear box like 2 month ago just to see if it will fix the problem but it didn’t
Curious, did the PCM fox your issue?

Mike are you having similar issues? I still get my P0700, and the 0891 codes every *initial* start up. I followed through some of the troubleshooting I found for the P0891 at https://www.zinref.ru/avtomobili/Jeep/090_10_00_Jeep_Wrangler_TJ_2005_year_manual_ENGLISH/166.htm (starts on page 2) testing for voltage and continuity etc - and it all points towards the computer, just havent wanted to drop the money on a "hope thats it" ergh. What as been annoying for me, is the codes throw right away at start up and I can clear them out, and am good to go. Sometimes for the rest of the day. If I am running errands and back in and out of the jeep with less than an hour or so between startups, it never comes back. If it sits too long, then the codes come back. If it trips limp mode, I do the limp mode reset while driving (turn off, shift to neutral, re-start, shift back into drive) then clear any codes again if needed. From there it shifts and drives like butter - just the initial codes starting up. Frustrating!

No, luckily I don’t currently have codes, but I had them months back until I drained the fluid and reset the computer. I like to read feedback regarding what fixes these sorts of problems for folks (in case I’m in the same boat at some point).

Sounds like you are dealing with you issue in stride though (as annoying as it is), and I completely understand not wanting to pay the cost for a computer when you don’t know if it will fix your issue. Luckily, Wranglerfix seems to know his stuff and helps folks narrow their issues down to the computer when applicable. I feel like my day is coming.
