So my 6 speed 4.0 2005 just all the sudden. Turn the key, and nothing. There is power.
1. Put Volt meter on battery, 12.65.
2. Turned the key, drops 12.50 ish.
3. Previous owner rigged a "kill switch" to the clutch safety interlock switch....kind of interesting actually, ran it to a switch mounted inside the center console, just inside the fuzzy where the 4 wheel shifter is,.
3. That being spliced in, I just took it out. Ordered a new one, but in the mean time I just took off the splice and direct wired together to close the circuit like the clutch is depressed. (I will be installing the new one either way, pushing in the clutch is fine by me to start it, ha)
4. I put volt meter on the battery positive and to the body of the starter....it grounded correctly and read the same as the sitting battery, 12.65.
5. I put the positive in the small wire to the starter (from ignition) and grounded to the body of the starter....when the key is turned, nothing. ((I believe that should read 12.x))
6. I took off the starter and Autozone said good (I don't completely trust that, but it spins)
7. The motor isn't frozen, because I roll down the driveway and pop the clutch and we're all good.
I'm thinking it's down to the "ignition switch" on this TJ. Here's the kicker....literally Sunday morning I put in a new Ignition switch in my son's 2008 JK that is still here (he can't have it at West Point). I finish and walk to move my TJ....and when I get the Nothing! It's like the MFer's are jealous that I work on one.
Am I missing something that it could be? The only other thing I need to go back and do, is direct wire the starter, so put a wire on the ignition blade of the starter (probably not the right name) and other end to the battery positive. It should turn over. One question, if I do that test, can I leave the key not in? I can't think of a reason to have it in, I'm not looking to start it, just check that it turns it over with direct current. that would confirm the starter works "under load". I can't think of anything else that would just go out like that.
