32RH dipstick length?

Measurements need to be taken from the top. Not the top of the handle but the top of the dipstick where it rests on top of the dipstick tube.

There are chrysler transmissions that do not come with dipsticks and use a “special tool” that measures from the bottom of the trans pan. Both tj autos do not apply to that.

My first measurement was from the top of the tube as if the dipstick was fully seated, not the handle.

I just picked up an 01 TJ with the 32RH. The dipstick doesn't stay down in the fill tube so Im not sure if its right. Here are some pics of the stick.

This is a common question and I've yet to see an answer I believed 100%.

If anyone has a 98-02 TJ with the 4.0 engine and automatic transmission please carefully measure the length of its dipstick and post it here. I'll add it to my notes for future reference.

is the 97 disptick known to be different, or are you just hedging your bets because the 97 is always different?

Ok, to follow up on my post above, I recently changed the fluid and decided to measure the internal length since the dipstick didn’t seem to seat well. I first took the handle end apart to check for wear or broken pieces. Nope, all was as it should be - no loose parts to cause the spring back.

as you will see in the attached pics, it seems the dipstick I have is maybe 1/4 to 1/2” longer than it should be. Top rail of the pan to the bottom where the stick contacts the pan is just under 1” but the stick extends about 1 3/8” below the trans case when the upper end is fully seated. Hence the “springy” feel.

what gives? Any experts have the answer, maybe Mr. Blaine?

Well it looks like our measurements are close, but not exactly the same. Even so, I don’t understand why I have such a rebound and bottoming out.

i suppose the next thing is to measure the tube. Anything is possible with unknown prior owners and 236k miles.

Thanks Ricky’s, it seems to match what Mrblaine and I have. Just not sure why it hits the bottom of the pan before it seats up top.

I can’t get an accurate measurement of the tube. I did get the pic of the trans end but really don’t know if it should have a rolled shoulder or just this plain fit.

I pulled up an 01 parts catalog and sure enough it calls for those grommets rather than an Oring. I suppose the grommet would make the tube ride a little higher in the housing. If it does, that may be my issue (at least in regard to the dipstick length 🤓).

Here's how my pop's 98 looks. There looks to be some kind of seal

Going off the valve cover with a level against the pcv grommet i got about 2.5" from the bottom of the level to the rear of the tube(highest point). Idk how helpful that is. I didn't have 3 hands to take a pic of the tape measure but this is how i held the level
