Last week, I bought a gallon of Red Line MTL, just to have on hand. It has worked beautifully for years in my NVG3550 5 speed, factory installed in my 2000 TJ. Last Tuesday, I junked the BFG AT/KO3 tires in favor of new Falken Wildpeaks.
Thursday, 2 days later, I heard a bang down low and had clearly busted a hard part associated with 3rd gear. Reverse, 1 and 2 worked, so I could return to my driveway and park. Yeah, I have 207K personal miles on this Jeep that I special ordered in the Fall of 1999. Gonna be buried in it. So, I did a bunch of research and reading here, and:
Got on the horn and spoke with Novak, who told me they expected delivery of new AX-15s by mid July. Also bought one of their rebuilt 231s, with the SYE1 slip yoke eliminator installed. Found a local small shop who would accept delivery and do the installation. He will park the pallet and call me when my Jeep comes up on his job list. Ordered a gallon of Red Line MT-90, too.
Got to thinking about the long straight shift lever that will come on the AX-15, and ordered a B&M 45059 Sport Shifter from Amazon. There has been mention of it possibly being necessary to drill and tap for a transmission breather if the B&M is installed.
Other detail, in case of interest: Tom Wood’s is on tap for a rear double cardan drive shaft. My single adjustable Currie control arms will make it easy to rotate the aft diff to make the pinion parallel to the drive shaft. I plan to reuse my original shift knob, but have ordered from Q’tec a Crown replacement and Mopar shift pattern insert, in case. I have a new tranny mount and shift boot. Already using a cable shifter for my 231. Trans shopman asked about the clutch, and we will replace it if either of us thinks it wise.
I ask if any of y’all can provide any detail on the necessity for a new trans breather hole with the installation of the B&M shifter. I expect the shifter by Tuesday and can easily get that done long before the swap is done. I don’t want to waste the shop’s time diddling with such issues during the swap.
Also, anyone have thoughts about any other snags concerning this swap that they may be familiar with?
