Check transmission fluid level with the engine running and transmission in neutral.

Set the ebrake and chock your tires. Then crawl underneath and see if the shift lever on the side of the transmission moves when someone else moves the shifter from park to first and back. Do it without the engine running.

If it doesn't move that means a connection at one end of the cable is off or the cable is broken

Make sure transfer case is not in neutral

Find a copy of the service manual in the files section, it will help you with adjusting and fixing.

Transfer case probably went dry and burned up. Did you ever have the level checked? This and the differential are two places a lot of people don't know have oil. But, it's in the owners manual as a distant maintenence.
