what would, if any, benefits be to swapping my NP231J to a NP 249 on my 97 tj 5 speed even if possible ?

odd- I usually see Jeeps being converted from NP249 to NP231J. I guess its owner preference. But the 249 is not a great xfer, had a few hiccups and it was a full time 4wd transfer case. Again to each their own, but I would guess you have a specific reason you want to do this. Good luck with any direction you choose.

oh Im not thinking about changing at all , just wondered if the 249 was a better TransCase. Thanks for the info.
The NP249 is a full time transfer case. I don't think you'll find many of us who would take the NP249 over the NP231.
Not better it’s full time an np242hd might be better as it has part time and full time 4wd. The wj’s Had the in a few years but had a long tail cone
