AC, hard turn on and rough idle

So, when turning on ac it "thumps" noticeably. It also causes a rough and inconsistent idle. AC itself works well. Are there any sensors I should check? Any other ideas?

If it's like the 2.5L, there's a solenoid the a/c is supposed to engage to raise the engine idle rpms a tad. Does the 2.4 do that too and if so is it working? I'm nowhere near my FSM to look it up. Maybe tomorrow.

I had that thought. If it has something like that it does not seem to be working. Or working properly. Will look into that, thanks Jerry.
