Trying to figure out where this plug goes to. It comes out of the harness just to the left of the main harness union in the middle of the top firewall. It has only 2 wires, red and black. Any help is appreciated. I can't find anything that isn't plugged in. Help!

I don't seem to have a harness in that exact position as your picture but maybe mine is tucked in more right now after my engine install. My best guess would be the Starter or the Crankshaft Position Sensor. See if both of those are plugged in over there on the passenger side.

Both of those are plugged in. No idea what else it would be. I forgot to mention on the post, but it's a 2001 TJ with the 4L and auto trans. It runs, so I doubt it would start if it was to the starter or crank sensor.

Maybe to temperature sensor in bottom of battery tray. End off sensor may still be mounted to firewall under tray.

Ok so I just checked on mine (2000), and I don't have any wiring harness like that coming out of my firewall like you do. Lol, hood light classic! Good call @mrblaine!

Basically, I was saying it's been a long day and I was an idiot for not realizing it was for the hood light. Lol. 😏
We do it practically daily. We know exactly what they go to when we unplug them. Putting it all back together a couple weeks later we realize that the blue tape and sharpie were not such a bad idea after all.

I took tons of pictures, however that one missed it's photo op.
