Running into a common issue with my Exogate... With the MORryde-provided relocation brackets, the tire is very far away from the snubbers. Without the brackets installed, the tire hits the bumper when the gate is closed. I'm surprised that there doesn't appear to be a common fix for this, other than people running multiple snubbers + extensions.

I've also seen a handful of instances where the OEM stamped-steel carrier eventually breaks and must be repaired or replaced. One suggestion that comes up is to run an aftermarket carrier, something like this Rugged Ridge one:

However, due to how it mounts, the bent lip on the Exogate prevents it from being used without using the Exogate relocation brackets as well, which while it does add some strength, compounds the problem with distance from the snubbers/tailgate itself. In this post, @Jchadscud's picture shows it well:

So my question - why has someone simply not notched the Exogate where the aftermarket carrier would sit to fit it? Essentially, cutting off the horizontal lip between the two orange arrows below:

This would allow the Rugged Ridge carrier (or any of the aftermarket options really) to sit flush against the Exogate, which would eliminate the need to use the relocation brackets. This would in theory bring the tire closer to the snubbers while also being notably stronger. Additionally, the tire should clear the bumper, since the Rugged Ridge (and other) carrier is a "+2 inch" rise and extension (basically it's what the Exogate brackets do).

Am I missing something???

I fully agree, there's no reason to use their relocation brackets - you want the tire as close to the tub as possible. What we did with mine was to modify the stock carrier, moving it up ~2". We could have gotten another ~1/2" if the vent on the tailgate wasn't there (e.g. earlier TJs can get a little extra clearance).

I'm running 35x12.5 tires and it's as close as it can get since the tire presses on the arm (adding another snubber, effectively).

Just to confirm - you simply cut some flat stock and moved the carrier up (by moving the mounting holes)?

That is amazingly close to the tailgate and perfect IMO - what backspacing you running?

Yeah, so first cut the top flange off and relocate it inside (below) where it was, weld it up. You can then temporarily attach it back to the tailgate to measure how much you'll need to cut for below to extend the bottom and drill new holes. You can also see in the picture that we added gussets, it may not be necessary but seemed worth it since we were already there. We also welded up all the open cracks in the factory carrier we could. @jjvw was nice enough to help me do all this - so kudos to him on this.

3.75" backspacing on those wheels, and I did have to extend the other snubbers about 3/4".

Interesting, wonder if that was a design change from the first generation ExoGate? Mine I used the stock tire carrier and i didnt have any issues with a 33in tire.

What was the tire width and wheel backspacing???

Seems that everyone I know with 35"s and 3.75" BS has a similar issue... makes you wonder if there was a change (and if there was, what was it?)?

285/75r16 on stock Moab, so backspacing might be helping me some too.

Oh wow, this is a great idea. Another project to add to the list :)
