AX-15 maintenance

Change the fluid. Drain it and fill it back up. I used redline mt-90 when I had a AX.
additionally, if you do decide to go this route... pull the fill plug first to make sure you will be able to fill it before you drain it out. dont want to end up in the situation where the fill plug is seized in place or stripped and your sitting there with a empty transmission.

Belay my last about the use of Redline MTL; the GL5 High Pressure additive can only attack yellow metals such as brass synchros when temperatures rise above 300*.

The MT90 is a 75W/90 GL4 and the MTL is a 70W/80 GL5.

MTL is still GL4, just different weight. https://www.redlineoil.com/mtl-75w80-gl-4-gear-oil

Also, GL5 rating doesn't necessarily mean it's not safe for brass synchros. Some GL5 oils specifically state that it is safe for use with yellow metals.

I read some of the same reports, but if you read further some state they are safe because the attack on the synchros does not take affect until over 300*.
The '98 XJ 4.0L AX15 had synchro problems before the problem with attack on yellow metals was clarified. The AX15 was so bad between 1st and 2nd that it would crunch no matter how I shifted and finally required the synchros to be replaced.
