Bad motor?

Thanks, I watched the same video. So, the oil pump does and does not sound like the issue, but it is the least expensive fix at the moment, so that is what I am going to try first. Either way sucks. I am trying to be positive. Again, I was suprised at the lack of particulate in the oil and filter
 
I have, on my first car. 1982 Cutlass Supreme with the 3.8L 6. There was nothing "supreme" about that engine. Anyway, the oil pressure was low, so my dad and I replaced it, bump the oil pressure up so much we found a bunch of oil leaks! It was kind of a crappy car, but I learned a LOT from it.
When I was about 13 that was one of the first mechanical repairs I ever did, and it was on my mom's 85 cutlass supreme with a 3.8. Those engines are die hard though. We drove that car everywhere when I was a kid!
 
Well, there was one other detail that I forgot to mention. Prior to last week, after starting and driving awhile and shutting it off, if I went to start it again in a few minutes, the pressure was slow to come back up. Getting back to business. I watched the same video about oil pressure, and I don't disagree. But, I had nothing to loose, and I figured that it would be a good bonding/learning experience for my son, so we took it apart. The most difficult part of the job was droping the three bolts from the exhaust. I was kind of relived to find that the pickup on the pump was 80% plugged. From what I can see, the cam doesn't seem scored. So, I am going to purchase a new pump and reinstall. I am not saying that this will fix my issues, but it definitely wasn't helping. Stay tuned.

Oh wow, that oil pump is indeed plugged! Looks like you may have found your problem (fingers crossed for you)!

Let us know if that solves it.
 
Yeah, I have my fingers crossed. Other questions. On the outside of the pan, at the back where it meets the bell housing, there is a rubber, seal, I am guessing that is just for added protection, correct? I rebuilt a ford 289, and I "glued" the gasket to the pan, any reason why this won't work for the jeep?

You have a manual Trans? Mine is m/t and has that, looks to be a dust/debri shield to me. I did the rear main seal on mine when I 1st got the jeep, but it's been a couple years. I don't remember that part giving me any problems though.

Well, first and foremost, I appreciate everyones input and advise. I think that I was successful! The new high volume pump is installed and it is all buttoned up. I primed the pump by filling it from the filter port with an oil can prior to installing the wix filter. Started up, and had 60 psi pressure, and no leaks! Upon warming up, the pressure did fall to the expected mid 20psi range. Needless to say, my son and I are estatic. I do have a regret and a rant. First, I regret not changing out the main bearings while I had it apart, supposedly easy to do. Now the rant. The hardest part of the job was droping the three bolts from the exhaust, at least I thought that the were bolts, as it turns out, they are pressed in studs, why would one put a he head on a pressed in stud? Second rant, the three studs are not the same size, and third, they are not symmetrical. ....no sense to me. Needless to say they have been replaced with three bolts of the same size.
