I bought a new battery for my '97 TJ a few months ago. I drove it yesterday and the battery gauge showed it was down (no charge). I parked the jeep and twenty minutes later started it up. When it started, the gauge immediately went down to zero again. It wouldn't start right away until it sat for a while.

What should I check for?

You can get a $10 multimeter and put it on the battery while running. If it shows roughly 14 volts I'd say there's a connection somewhere corroded or broken. I had a 1990 Silverado with a phantom voltage gauge. Some days it worked. Others it didn't. One day the alternator went out, I replaced it, and the gauge was still messed up. Learned to look past it.
