Cabin air intake duct cover: am I missing something?

Considering that was just over a year ago your best option would be to copy the part number and do a google search for it. Or search the part number on ebay. Just remember these are for the 1997 to 1999 model years.

eBay is your best bet. I used self tapping screws to retrofit mine and some silicone sealant for good measure. The cabin IS quieter, but not sure if it is the hood I used, or a combination of the hood and the insulation material I put in there.

Older TJ's didn't have the cover, and it doesn't fit. I have one I might try to retrofit at some point though. I went through pretty much the same process you did with the same leaking symptoms. I replaced the seal between the cowl and the back of the hood with a newer style that goes the full length, not just the top part. That solved my leak. I think it was coming in where the foam seals around the a/c lines in the firewall. Not sure though.

The seal he's talking about is like this going the whole length of the hood/cowl seam. This is how the later TJs came from the factory.


It's just a peel and replace thing.

oh I have something like that. im having the same issue as the OP with a big hole open where the AC fresh air intake is with no plastic intake cowl on my '97 like his '98.

The early seal was just at the top and did not wrap down the side to the fender. The replacement seal wraps all the way down to the fender like this.

The Plastic part was 55115157AB listed above. These are only available used, but can be found with a google search.

Outside of that - ensuring your cowl drain is clear, ensuring the foam seal for the AC is in place, that the AC condensation is draining out.

With the excellent progression of 3d printing having an upgraded part made wouldn’t be too hard either. Maybe incorporate some type of particle filter as well if you fancy that. All the parts I used for my upgrade were purchased as used parts off eBay. Self tapping screws and silicone/ window seal is all that’s really needed. I went nuts with the heat insulation but it did provide much cooler air coming through the cowl into the cabin.

This is true, though not going as quickly as I'd like. Did a survey of my V1 design installation a few weeks ago, now going on 2-2.5 years installed. Still doing the job and holding up well, though I have noted a few items for revision in the V2 design.
