Can someone help? Jeep died

So my son is driving down the highway and he says the jeep started “making a funny noise and start slipping”. Come to find out it was making a rattling sound and he said It was like the fuel stop going to the engine. Once it cooled down for about 20 minutes he was able to start it back up but was only able to drive it for about four or five minutes before it did it again. It’s a 99 w/ 4.0 auto.

Any suggestions? It is now parked in a parking lot about 60 miles away from home

The check engine light came on, the oil pressure and temperature gage read as normal.

The starting point here is to scan the thing with an OBDII code reader and see what engine codes it's throwing. Let us know what codes you find.

Any local auto part store will pull the codes for free FYI.

Can you drive it to an auto parts store like NAPA? They will do a free scan for you. That's where I'd start.

I'm guessing its one of the sensors related to the typical stalling while driving like CPS. Could be fuel pump related too but sounds like a bad sensor. Like @Chris said, the good thing is that its giving you a code, thats certainly the best place to start.

A lot of times this will happen and not even throw a code, so consider that a plus that it did.

Thanks all. I will find out tomorrow if i can drive it. It’s about 60 miles from home right now in a parking lot. Not sure how far a store is from where it’s parked. He said that the engine was running but said it felt like the transmission was slipping and that’s what was causing the jerking feeling. My fear is that a couple weeks ago I replace the transmission pan gasket and was stupid and used gasket sealer. I’m hoping that it’s not something to do with gasket sealer breaking loose and getting into the transmission. Not sure if that’s a easy fix or not this jeep stuff is getting irritating sometimes

Also possible an alternator failure.

My 97 TJ had similar symptoms, and the engine was running off the battery, until the battery died, and it was just like it ran out of gas. Sat for a bit, it started and ran for a bit then died again. Started again and ran, amp meter showed charging, and after 30 min to an hour the amp meter showed no charge, then charge again. Did this from Rawlings Wyoming to Erie Colorado, and then died for good. Hope this helps

Does the ignition key on/off 3 times show engine codes on a 99 ?

OK just a follow. I went down to pick up the jeep started it and everything work just as it was supposed to. The check engine light was still on and when it was checked it read that the crankshaft for camshaft was out of place. I’ve been told that is just a generic message for stuff is wrong. There was a large puddle of transmission fluid under the transmission. My plan is to drop the transmission pan and see if there is anything in the pan or if the fluid is crappy. It is brand new fluid so I should be able to see if something is burned.
