Can the TJ survive on the highway?

35" tires and 4.88 gear with AX 15 5 speed. Between Rock Hill, SC and Charlotte, NC on I-77 if I don't go 85 I'll get my ass run over. No problems up to 100, 5th gear is a very high overdrive.

My stock '05 LJ with the 6 speed and 30x9.50s handles about the same. I just don't get in any hurry with it and usually take the back roads to begin with. On the hwy, 60 to 65 seems to be it's happy spot.

I did not get a TJ to go fast on the highway and I also try to take the back roads. Even while doing the speed limits on these roads some self inflated asshole always manages to ride my ass. 60 to 65 on the hwy. is where mine likes to be as well. That being said there will probably be a re-gearing in the future.

3.73 with Dana 44 in da rear

75 or 80 easily. But you'll need steady nerves to get much of that.

When I had 3.73 and 33s I could barely get the thing up to 70,and if I did it wasn't for long because I'd hit an incline and bog down to 50, without dropping it all the way to 3rd. But then it sounded like the motor was going to explode. Now I have 4.88 and 35s and I can hit 70 easily and also maintain it easily.

Thanks to a bunch of help from this forum, my Rubicon is very highway worthy. My wife has just driven it from Arkansas to SW
Colorado while I pulled our travel trailer with our GMC. That is a 1000 mile journey.
High Temps have been in the 95-100 range.

For the next three months it can be a jeep, with great clearance for these 4wd roads. She did the driving so we can have a summer and fall of fun.

Did you take 70? How was the road? Weve been toying with the idea of taking ours to Colorado but the thought of 8hrs in the TJ is painful. Replacing the shocks this week so I hope that helps.

We were I40 to Albuquerque; then north into sw Colorado. My wife drove the TJ and
I pulled our trailer. The couple camped next to us is from GA; she drove their tj and he pulled a trailer. Both tjs had lifts and ran 33. The rough tires were the only complaints. I think some 6 ply 31s with a little more highway design would improve rove
