I have a 2006 TJ LJ, under load (starting up a hill from stop) the rear axle sometimes chatters, especially when turning

My mechanic says I have a post-traction rear axle which I find strange

anyone else have this happen?

Thanks

If your mechanic suggests that you have a "posi-traction" rear axle (aka a limited slip differential) and it chatters mainly while turning, the friction modifier in the diff fluid main have broken down and become ineffective over time. Or perhaps the fluid was changed at some point and gear lube without the friction modifier was used, and no supplemental friction modifier (aka limited slip additive) was added.

You could try removing the diff fill plug and squirting a few ounces of additive in there. If you are unsure of the maintenance history, it would probably be better to change the diff fluid, or have it changed, and make sure gear lube is used with the proper additive.
