When I'm making a turn and hit a small bump I feel a clunk in the steering wheel and the dead pedal I rest my left foot on. I played around with the steering column under the hood and feel play in the area right where the steering column goes through the fire wall. I'm assuming there shouldn't be play there and that is where my problem is. Does anyone know if in fact there should be play there, and if not what could the issue be? Bad bearing or u-joint?

I had a slight “catch”in my steering but no clunk. My lower intermediate shaft was worn, I replaced it and all is good now. You may want to have someone exercise the steering as you watch the front moving parts for excess movement. Pay attention to ball joints, front drive shaft universals and tie rod ends.
