While I was out of town, someone side swiped my parked jeep. Just the front left fender. They left a note and responded when I reached out. Said they'd like to pay to have it fixed, or whatever amount I think is fair.

I've never had anything painted before. What might you expect this to set me back? Seems like it could be easier to just find another and replace it.

The other thing is, I don't much care about having it fixed. It's a jeep. Whatever. But I'd still definitely like to get what I'm owed for this.

Would you guys just settle on a number and handle it privately, or try and go through insurance? I already have a claim open for a theft attempt that damaged my steering column so it'll be in the body shop soon to have them fix that already. But it feels like it might just be easier to get a check for some repair costs and be done with it.

If it's already going in to the body shop for another claim, I would just get them to estimate the damage and provide that to the person who hit it. Then, if I felt the same as you do about the damage, I'd have the body shop buff it out as best they can and pocket the difference. It won't look perfect, but it will look much better than it does now.

Make sure you get something in writing that they hit you and will pay before you give them the amount. I've been down that road before. When it came time to pay they went silent and I ended up going through insurance anyway. With that documentation in hand my insurance was able to go after theirs. I got the deductible recovered at it was not held against me as a reportable event with my insurance.

Hopefully you won't have any issues like that but we are dealing with human nature...

I bought mine with the painted flare looking like that, it annoyed the hell out of me at first but I just polished it up a bit and now live with it. like you say its a jeep.
Easier to send that pic to a local detailer for a rough cost than going a paint shop for a quote.

Can't tell if it's actually damaged, but they aren't available anymore.
So it would probably cost you at least a hundred for a replacement in decent condition.

$.99 for a roller, $8.99 for a can of rustoleum, and about $3.00 for a rolling tray… sorry, I couldn’t resist to roll out with that one…

This is great to know. I want to give the guy the benefit of the doubt because he was forthright enough to leave a note and respond to my texts in the first place, but like you said. Who knows what can happen. Question for you - how would you go about going through insurance if they go silent? I'd imagine the name and cell # I have isn't enough for my insurance to somehow locate them and their policy?

not damaged, just the cracked and scuffed paint. I assumed they weren't made anymore but wasn't sure if there's a place out there that has NOS parts etc. Guess painting it or just getting over it is the move.

yeah that sounds about right. If i were to even bother dealing with it I'm not sure I'd want to drop the cash to have it fully repainted. It's only gonna get fucked up again. a detail and move on with it, sure

yeah I'll probably do this just to have some justification for the number I throw them. TBH if I end up having to pay out of pocket I probably won't bother, but if they'll just stack it on my bill under my existing claim or let me throw them some $ on the side, then sure.

What @cliffish said, take it to a body shop and get an estimate. No insurance company needed.
