Im pretty sure I already know the answer, but the bearing doesn't need to be packed before install, right? It's lubed by virtue of the diff fluid level being above the axle tube opening, right? Which is why the seal is at the end of the tube, right?

If somebody wants to discuss how the bearing is lubed on the Dana 35 we can do that here too.

Both axles are lubed by the gear oil running down the tube. No need to pack them with anything although sometimes they come packed anyways depending on the brand. For me, SKF was packed, Timken was not. Gear oil is going to make it down there either way, doubt it matters too much.

I've never done the bearings and seals on a 35...I vaguely recall seeing the bearing at the end of the tube, but I don't remember seeing a seal there.

I lather my axle shaft bearings in gear oil right before I put them in. That will keep it lubed until oil from the diff gets there.

Yeah, I didn't do that when I replaced mine, but it seems like an obvious step in hindsight.
