Differences between 4.0 with distributor and 4.0 with coil pack

I’ve been looking to replace the engine in my 2001. I’m having a hard time finding a 2001 and up 4.0 in my area. I was wondering if their were any other differences on the older engines besides the tabs on the block to mount the coil pack. Can I run an older block and just make brackets to mount the coil pack? Any info is appreciated.

The blocks are different in other ways. It takes a different water pump, the accessory mounting is different. You might be able to swap it over accessories and all but the AC compressor is in a different place so your AC lines wouldn't match. It seems like it would be more of a hassle than it would be worth just finding one from the right year.

You might consider a real engine. An LS.

Thanks for the info. I’ll hold out for a good 01-06 engine. I’m not gonna do an LS lol. I have a 71 c10 with a big block that eats up all my money. Just looking for a factory swap.

I just looked. 11 of them from 800 to 2k within 5 miles of 64106 with and without warranties.

My 99 definitely had it there.
