Differential / Pinion Issues

A poor install is a poor install, but what I want to know is why hitting a pothole causes the pinion gear to shred.
I have seen a pinion yoke snap due to a d/s being too long.
I'm not arguing that at all. I'm just saying start at the problem and work back until you find it. There's more to this story I'm sure...

And I'm not arguing a poor install either, but it just seems odd that it happens when he hits a pothole. Perhaps the pothole has nothing to do with it. Unless it's a crater. :)
There has to be more to the story.
