Do hard top and soft tops both use the same tailgate retainer bar clips?

I dont think the hard top came with the same type retainers if any at all.
this solved my rattle issue.

You can also try to adjust the glass down and tighten it back up.
That didn't work for me so plan B ^

Great thread! I tightened up the bolts for my hinges and glass and that took out 90% of the rattles, but it's not totally gone. Thanks for the info and pics above.

It has been 15-16 years since I last had my Mopar hard top so I don't recall how it did but it definitely used the brackets you removed to hold the glass down. The hard top in your photo doesn't remind me of my Mopar hard top so yours may be different in how the glass is held down. Also, my '97 TJ used two different brackets depending on if it was a hard top or soft top but it appears that changed later on. I checked the bracket part numbers for you 2006 and they're the same whether it's a hard top or soft top.

This is the page out of the 2006 Mopar parts guide, it might help. Can you tell if your hard top is a Mopar or an aftermarket brand?

Hi Jerry,

I just purchased a hardtop, and took the rear retainer clips off that came with my soft top, because they look like they would interfere with the glass window closing fully. I wanted to be sure, are there clips that I can buy that screw into the same location that help the glass stay secured? Right now it looks like i'm missing something.

I had a hard top and those clips you removed were left on in my case. You want those clips back on and the gasket lays over them. Also adding the rubber tubing to the top of the tailgate does wonders for snugging things up.

The stock hardtop on my 2001 requires no brackets or anything else to keep the glass in. The brackets for the soft top need to come off and nothing replaces them. Without taking the soft top brackets off, the glass won't close. Not sure if that changed in other years but it is how it works on my 2001 at least.

I had a 2004 LJ and left the brackets on no problems.

Then it is not a Mopar hard top. I had a Mopar hard top I bought from the dealer and the glass would not stay down without the correct brackets which are different from the soft top brackets my TJ came with.

I did this and just cut it to fit. I cut some short pieces to protect my door openings from the straps too. It provides a nice cushion at the end of the door swing. I haven't driven it yet, but the back glass is super tight now, so it should cut down on the rattle.

I tried to find them online but couldn't. I also don't have any brackets for my hard top lying around. It hasn't been on the Jeep in a few years, but I'm certain there aren't any brackets to go along with the hard top. The rear glass is held in by the tailgate.
