Dreaded P0442 is back

Im at a loss. Bought a new gas cap, the code disappeared. I finished that tank of gas and refilled. Drove approx 200 miles, of which 120 was highway, the other 80 or so was city. Then out of nowhere, the code returns. Could it be my rotting fuel vapor hose coming from the gas tank? It's definitely in need of replacing.

I did have a filler hose rot on my 2001. It will become evident if you "top it off", it will spill out if it is compromised.

I didn't see this until now, but YES, I would certainly say that a rotting vapor line could very well be the issue. In fact, I'd almost be willing to bet on it. At the very, very least, that should be ruled out be replacing it with a new one.

Thank you, Chris. It's almost common sense that I aught to replace it. And it doesn't cost much. In fact, maybe that's the odd noise / clanking that I just recently started hearing coming from the driver side rear area. It was incredibly corroded, so I don't doubt it.

Maybe I'll just drop my tank as well and replace the pump while at it. First start after sitting a two days, its always a long turnover before firing up.

Chris, you were right! The rotting fuel vapor line was the issue. Pain in the rear to install, but not too bad to remove. It literally split into two immediately as I pulled it from it's last holding clip.

New one went in and in less than 30 miles, the CEL went byebye. It's been just about 3 weeks since, many miles added and no CEL return. Feels good to save some dough and fix an issue DIY style!

Ahhh, thanks for updating this thread! I have a feeling that a lot of people who experience this issue fail to check the fuel vapor line. In fact, I would bet that most people end up throwing a considerable amount of time and money at everything else, never even thinking to look at that vapor line.

Glad you updated this, because in the future, someone may stumble upon this and save themselves a lot of time and frustration. Especially since replacing that vapor line is much cheaper (and easier) than some of the other stuff.

You're welcome, Chris! And I appreciate you confirming my suspicion prior. The crazy thing is, I literally noted replacing it and had it on my 'to do' since back in 2015! But since the code was intermittent and every time I greased the old seal on the gas cap it would clear, I let it go for a long time. Let me not failed to mention that it did not look like a fun or easy job. It's really tucked up in there against the frame. Especially towards the back with all the curves. Yet, I was really surprised at how easy the change out was with some patience and a little thoughtful calculating.
