Has anyone had problems with 5-760x u-joints losing the grease, getting rusty and failing? I'm considering the u-joints with needle zerk grease fittings. Has anyone used grease fittings on each cap?
I am not the biggest fan of greaseable axle joints. They have a habit of dying faster than their sealed counterparts if you live where there is bad weather.
Get non greaseable and you won't have that problem.
The Spicer-style, solid-body U-joint comes “lubed for life,” and does not have grease Zerk fittings. This makes them a little stronger because they do not have the stress risers created by the opening for the Zerk fitting in a greasable U-joint.
I have been using 5-760x joints for the last 5 years without a catastrophic failure. When a joint makes a clicking sound, I replace it. Usually more than 1 cap is full of rust dust. I never replaced a u-joint that had grease in the caps. My next u-joint will likely be like the picture above.
