Packing the TJ for the annual Elk hunt. Got on a herd that looks really promising for this year. And it looks like it needs a little culling to boot. One five point satellite bull, one four point herd bull, one four point satellite bull, lots of spikes and forks in the herd. A ton of cows, but they are off limits until spring.

...and the four month old grand-daughter is going! The boys decided to stay home this time.

Now that cracks me up for some reason. I'm taking the TJ. Where we are going neither the JKU nor the Suburban will fit. There is some question about getting the oldest SIL's pickup in far enough to be worthwhile, so I may be getting a winch out of the deal if he pushes just a little too hard. Buying and installing a winch would be cheaper than the tow bill, for sure.

Personally I'm surprised you've gone this long without a winch. I think I know what you need to ask for for Christmas.

I remember going to Pacific City beach where all the cars drive down on the sand. I can't tell you how many assholes I see driving their lowered cars or stock minivans down on the sand and then end up getting stuck within the first minute.

I talked to this local guy there with a truck who said he makes his living during the Summer by charging people $50 a pop to get them out with his winch on his truck. At first some might think it's greedy, but I don't. I think it's a great way to make some money.

Sure, I'd tow someone out for free with my winch, but I'm not going to tow out 50-100 cars all day long for free!

Me too. But, on the other hand, I haven't had a winch on any of my rigs since the 70's. I think Carter was President at the time. One of these days that's going to bite me in the ass, hard. Pretty sure AOR is going to sell me a winch this winter, especially since there are two Wranglers in the family now. Well, three, if you count the youngest SIL's JKU. It's the responsible, adult thing to do, don't you think? The TJ can bail out the other, newer, higher dollar rigs when they get in a jam. Man I can be just evil sometimes.

That's one ugly tow truck that guy has, too. The only rigs that I've never seen get stuck down there are the Wranglers of various flavors and the 'Yota 4runners. Well, unless they were doing something particularly stupid. Pacific City is a place where you can be entertained all day just sitting and watching.

Last Summer when we went to Pacific City I watched at least a dozen cars get stuck within about an hour time frame. First it was a VW Passat, then it was a minivan, then it was a Honda Civic... I'm sitting here thinking why on earth are these guys bringing their cars on the beach? I wouldn't bother unless I had a significant amount of ground clearance and some nice tires.

Hell, I watched a guy in his JKU get stuck because he drove down onto the sand with street tires. Not even All Terrain tires, I'm talking about the same kind of tires you'd put on a minivan. He ended up digging himself in by going to slow and giving it too much throttle. It was funny because I talked to him and he was saying that the guys at the dealership (he just bought it) told him it would go just about anywhere.

I told him it might, but he needs to get some better off-road tires, air down, and learn how to properly drive it on the sand.
