Really considering buying a Jeep. I'm looking at a 2004 w/ both tops, 6 cyl, auto, 2017 wheels and tires with 2,000 miles....and 45,000 miles on the Jeep itself. It's spotless, but really is more money than I want to spend just to play around. It has a plow that's rarely been used...I can sell that and get some $$$ back. I was ready to pull the trigger....just because I think it will hold it's value and it doesn't need anything right now to be an awfully nice toy. Here's the problem.....I came across a 97 today. Obviously not perfect....but very, very little rust, just the soft top which is fine, good wheels/tires & decent interior and I can probably get it for $2500 or so. Issue is it's a 4 cyl. It's a manual. How much headache is it to swap in a 6 cyl....or maybe even something else.....Chevy V6 or a small V8? Neighbor is a mechanic with a building/lift/etc and is offering to do the work/help in exchange for some cash and beer lol.

Its a LOT of work. Actually, its almost as much work to swap a V8 as it is to swap a 4.0L. You have to replace the transmission behind the 2.5l too...The AX-5 will live a short life behind even the 4.0L. The engine management will also need to change as will the motor mounts. Not saying its impossible, but its not typically something where you pull the old, drop in the new and you're off to the races.
