Hi I just got this 01 Jeep Wrangler that has a 2.5L swapped into it from a 97 how much of a difference is there from the 01 and 97 and what all do I need to do to get it running the wiring harness for the 01 doesn’t match up and the 97 doesn’t hook to the harness going across engine on the firewall. Jeep won’t start so don’t know what to do to get this 9

Well look up the Vin of the 01. see if it came with a 4.0. if it did remove the 2.5 get a 4.0 and put it in there.

How do you look up the vin and the people said it had the 2.5 in it. It just had no compression on cylinder one so they swapped another one into it from a 97

google how somewhere on the vin will tell you the engine.
97 was the first years of the TJ. perhaps it had wiring closer to the YJ years the 01 could be way off. But either way almost all sensors on the actual engine should be in the same spots. You may have to do some splicing. Im not anywhere close to an expert of splicing different harnesses so best of luck on that!

FYI the 97 has a ton of diff connectors and parts yada yada. is so bad they have a 97-98 quirks page on here.

do you self a favor if the old harness is complete just get a used 2.5 for an 01 time frame way less issues are gonna pop up and way less work

The eighth digit in the VIN indicates what engine the Jeep came with.

H = 2.5L Leaded Gas
P = 2.5L Unleaded
S = 4.0L Unleaded
V = 4.0L Leaded
It came with the 2.5L unleaded but idk what the one they swapped into it and the harness from the 01 has extra plugs on it that I can’t find anywhere on the 97 engine to plug in
