Engine Whining When Accelerating

Hey all,

My engine recently just started making a whining noise, only when I am accelerating. If I rev the engine while stopped, moving but in neutral and rev, or am engine braking, it makes no whining noise.

Any thoughts as to what this could be? Checked transmission and transfer case fluids, they're good. Haven't replaced the serpentine belt. It's an '05 4L I6 with 58,000 miles. I do have an intermittent ticking noise that I believe is an exhaust leak (whole exhaust is rusted and could use to be replaced - whole underside of the Jeep was in rough shape when I got it) if that could have anything to do with it. Don't love the noise and definitely want to make sure it isn't causing some larger problem. The Jeep is my DD.

Replaced the clutch (including throw out and pilot bearings) in February. Could’ve been a bad bearing. Didn’t think it’d wear out that fast.

Could be power steering pump, mine does it at high rpm. If it gets worse change it out. Bearing goes you will lose the belt and cooling, alternator too.

Fluid level is fine. Any way to check if the pump/bearing is bad?

AA, Zone, O'Reilly etc...

Most of this stuff sadly at the box stores is Asian made. Quality is suspect.
It's like rotors. Nobody cuts rotors any more because of how cheap new rotors are. When your pads need replaced you MUST replace rotors too.

This stuff is junk. A lot of it anyways. So if you have a bad throw out bearing this soon it's not surprising to me.

Your pulleys...get a mechanic's stethoscope and listen. You can use a rubber hose up to your ear and listen that way as well.

I did come across a jeep before that behaved exactly as you say and it was the TO bearing

I sure hope it isn’t, would love to not have to pull the transmission off just to swap that bearing. Guess there are worse problems to have however

Pull the belt off, check pulley for bearing play. Spin is by hand see if it feel rough. Mine only does it at high rpm, but my buddies XJ did the same thing for a while, before it got worse and blew up in a very tough spot on a narrow winding road at night. It's on my list to replace now. Jeeps at 83k now and looks OEM, so its suspect.
