Engine won't stop revving on start

I just replaced my exhaust manifold...dont wish that on anyone.

Good news: engine starts up
Bad news: engine wont stop revving. Hits 5000 rpms in about 2 second without touching the accelerator. Im afraid to let it stay on to find out if its going to calm itself.

I’ve read that causes could be IAC valve, TPS sensor, or vacuum leak bur as far as I could tell all of those would contribute to a low/sputtering idle rather than a bat out of hell rev.

some observations for troubleshooting:

- Im not getting any 02 sensor fault codes
- I disconnected the accelerator cable from the throttle body and it *still* races.

- I installed a new throttle body gasket and there’s a chance that I havent torqued down enough but Im wary of stripping threads (which alreay happened on the cable riser platform). Even it its not sealed, I would expect sputtering rather than racing...right?

- I had to replace both upsteam 02 sensors which on the surface seems simple and straightforward but oddly the parts shop (O’Reilly, here on the west coast) had a helluva time determining which item was for the front and which was for the rear. according to their diagrams, the front should be 18 1/2 inches and the rear should be 13 1/2 inches, yet both ended up being 18 1/2. As best I could tell, the sensors and wiring harnesses are identical so I went with two 18 1/2 inch sensors. Any chance putting two “front” sensors would lead to current rpm problems. Seems unlikely but who knows.
 
Sounds like it could be a vacuum leak. You where certainly in the right area to bump into them and knock one loose

Would bet money that is the last time you that mistake on any engine for the rest of your life. Did an engine swap in my son's Dakota last summer and he wanted it up and running "now" while I wanted it up and running the first time. Takes time to learn "Finesse"

Now you can see why I always tell people to avoid tightening bolts any further, "snap"

yeah, I picked a helluva first project.

those dowel pins and those bolts are an absolute nightmare to deal with while the engine is in. Willing to bet at least two of those bolts are a nightmare even if the engine is out.

That's a commonly encountered lesson for sure, we get that same question asked more than several times a month. At least it's not an expensive fix. :)
