I’m going on my first group wheeling trip in a few weeks and am gearing up.

I have no comms right now and I’m interested in three super-basic walkie-talkies.

We’re an inexperienced group, will be doing only mild trails, and will stay together at all times; there will be children ages 1-10 along , so mainly the radios are for things like

“Joey needs to pee”
“Let’s go back a quarter mile and picnic in that meadow.”

Budget is ~$100 for three.

Any suggestions are welcome!

this is basically what FRS/GMRs are made for - I could tell you all sorts of cool ways to get a slightly higher quality radio with a lot of tinkering slightly cheaper, but TBH just get a pack fo the radios from your local Basspro/Walmart/ etc etc. They're all built to the same RF specs so pick the features you like. Motorola and Midland make really good stuff.

DavidBT is giving solid advice. I've done well with using the basic Motorola T100 (~$15 each) for Jeep Jamborees and private trail runs.

Ideally each vehicle would have radios, and at the very minimum make sure the lead and tailgunner vehicles have connectivity.
