Waymo recalls thousands of robotaxis.

Waymo has recalled 3,871 of its 5th Generation Automated Driving Systems because the vehicle's software may allow it to enter a closed freeway construction zone, causing the robotaxis to continue driving at posted speeds, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall report. The vehicle may avoid or fail to recognize a construction zone due to the faulty software. Of the vehicles outlined, Waymo estimates that 100% are impacted by the recall.

"Faulty software?!?" How can that be? This must be wrong - all this software is WONDERFUL, just ask any smartphone owner...

the reduction of / lack of onboard nanny electronics

This is one of the big selling features of this vehicle and approach, I think..at least in so far as they're marketing indicates. Reality may be different. For instance, you can put a central screen in if you want, but you don't have to have it, it isn't forced or necessary to use the vehicle.

I would be surprised if these systems weren't as imbedded in every system as much as GM , Ford , Stallantis and the imports.

Hard to know until it becomes reality, but at least it looks and sounds like they're pointed in the right direction. That's far more than I can say for anyone else making cars at the moment. If it turns out to be a bunch of bullshit, I don't think they will fare well or for very long. I think the internet will burn them at the stake. They've created expectations from potential buyers, they need to deliver or risk losing any shred of credibility they've earned so far.

Remember Biden crushed the EV market with a 100% tarrif on Chinese EVs. Hey tariffs are bad or something, says the left. Did it to protect the big 3 who made crap EVs and bailed on the market anyway

BYD has EVs starting at $10,000. I'd have bought my kids used $3-5k EVs for high school and college.

Unfortunately, the new electronics requirements as laid down by our Benevolent OverLords negates much of the intent. Yea, no screen - thank Goddess - but oh so much other crap.

Agree, the screen isn’t the issue, it’s all the other needless crap. Electric parking brake that engages automatically, so you need an expensive scan tool to disengage it just to change brake pads. Crap like that.

Oh, the screen is an issue, but not the only issue.

We could do something about that (and should have long ago). Might be a limited shelf life on that, though, given the apparent shape of things to come...

Its absolutely ridiculous.

I haven't logged into the Slate forum recently - I need to do that - but at one time it was all about "connect and go!". I'm not 100% sure that the thing won't "go" without the "connect". Its ALL about the PHOOOOOONNE, even here.

Some do, some don't (beg for it). I know plenty of people who don't want any part of it whatsoever. Some of them make me sound like Mother Theresa by comparison.

We have both types right here on this forum.
