Everything was going fine today until I was rolling to a red light in neutral at about 40 mph and the light turned green. I popped it into 4th gear and wham this extremely loud grinding sound. I pull my jeep over and then I try to put it into 1st to move and there is the grinding again. Had to get it towed, because she wasn't going anywhere. Also there was a humming noise that I have been ignoring for awhile that I thought may have been the transmission, now this has happened. Hoping I wont need a full transmission swap, what do you guys think?

Might be lucky and it's a clutch. Might not be lucky. Maybe pull the drain plug and see if there are a lot of metal particles sticking to it.
Get under there and inspect it first off. Drop the transfer case skid and look for any visible signs of damage. A loud grinding noise means metal-on-metal, so with that skid plate removed, you should be able to see if there is any external damage.
You need to inspect it before going any further. It could be smoking like a seized joint in the driveshaft, or it could be something internally.

Turns out rear differential is shot and that was causing the grinding in the trans. My options would be upgrade the original open diff to a better locking or limited slip differential. I am also considering just looking for a used Dana 44 rear axle in decent condition to replace the Dana 35 if I can find a deal. Open to recommendations. Thanks
