Did a day trip out near Mt. Rainier late in the afternoon yesterday. The NF road we took was pretty bombed out with potholes, made even worse with a few inches of snow and ice.

I was able to zig-zag the craters most of the way up, and succeeded in getting my wife up to a scenic area with some daylight left. Coming back down the mountain was a chore - several miles with sheer cliff / drop-offs on a narrow road, darkness, snow, ice and fog - I decided that it was time to creep in 4Lo.

All that I can say is .. WOW! I hadn't imagined too many on-road scenarios where I'd want or need a 4:1 gear ratio, but under the circumstances it was definitely the right configuration and it gave my brain a much needed rest :)

I got anxious just reading this. I’m glad to hear your TJ stepped up! I haven’t had to use mine yet but glad to know I have it if ever needed.

Mt Rainier NP is always a riot. That snow can get deep on ya real easy, your jeep equipped with a winch?

Yes, indeed I do! When I'm out solo I'm extra careful not to get it stuck after having a close call a month or so ago near Winchester mountain in the North Cascades. There was a light dusting of snow at the beginning of the NF road around 1800', which turned into ~2 1/2 to 3' of snow around 3300'.

A little crazy trying to turn around at night by myself, but I got out of there ok!

Absolutey!!! There's a bunch of awesome NF roads and trails up that way that I've hesitated to drive up on my own. It's a huge playground for people like us :D

Glad you made it back and kept the TJ rubber side facing down...Breathtaking pick. If you had your TJ in there somewhere it would have a fantastic candidate for pic of the month lol

That takes me back. Back in 91 or 92, I think, I was staying in Enumclaw when working at the Weyerhaeuser mill. On a day off one of the employees took me to Mount Rainer National Park. What I remember the most was this lodge. The lodge had this large diameter tube that extended straight up from the roof. The guy I was with said that was access for checking the lodge in the winter when the entire building was buried in snow. Beautiful country.

I was actually thinking about doing so and was bummed that some lady in a Chevy pickup with a big German Shepherd was parked and sleeping right close to that gate!
