Did a day trip out near Mt. Rainier late in the afternoon yesterday. The NF road we took was pretty bombed out with potholes, made even worse with a few inches of snow and ice.
I was able to zig-zag the craters most of the way up, and succeeded in getting my wife up to a scenic area with some daylight left. Coming back down the mountain was a chore - several miles with sheer cliff / drop-offs on a narrow road, darkness, snow, ice and fog - I decided that it was time to creep in 4Lo.
All that I can say is .. WOW! I hadn't imagined too many on-road scenarios where I'd want or need a 4:1 gear ratio, but under the circumstances it was definitely the right configuration and it gave my brain a much needed rest
