Came across this 2001 With 141K for for $1,000 and figured it would be a much more fun weekend driver than my 2002 Honda CRV. I'm new to all this and between rehabbing my house and my daughters elite travel softball schedule (very expensive) I'm kinda on a tight budget. I'm hoping to paint it silver 4" suspension lift (leaning toward zone) thinking 33" 12.5 tires (will they fit on stock rims or should I budget rims?) New fenders to start. Bumpers to follow then. I drive a company car for the most part it will see maybe 5K miles a year most will be on the road. Any suggestions would be helpful. I'll be doing most of the work myself with the help of my 14 year old DD who has claimed it when she gets her license and 5 year old son

That's a perfect price. Just a cheap weekend vehicle that you don't have to make payments on!

For the fender flares, you can buy new ones for $200 (I did off of ExtremeTerrain.com), or you can give them a little sanding and primer and paint them. If you do a good job, they'd look great!

I'd be careful about re-painting the whole thing. Factory paint jobs are always extremely high quality, and repainting an entire vehicle is expensive anyway.

With stock rims, you'd be pushing the 12.5" tires. If you get 10.5" wide tires you'd be fine!

A 4" suspension lift, to do it right, is around $2,000. I wanted one myself, however realized I don't need a 4" lift nor do I want that much invested in my Jeep. So I opted for a 2" BDS coil lift ($600), a 1.25" JKS Body Lift ($120), and a motor mount lift to give me the right angles ($75). I have 33x12.5" tires on steel wheels and have no issues with them! However, I think i'm gonna drop to 10.5" wide tires once these one's run out of tread.

Yea I was really excited about the price, I know the guy his wife had a new knee put in and can't drive it so he all but gave it to me. Mechanically it's in great shape the picture doesn't show how bad the paint is. There are a couple dime size cancer spots and paint is flaking in several areas. I think I'm gonna do all the prep work and take it to mako (I manage a Servpro with 30 vehicles there is one by me that has always been good to us) and let them spray it I've always liked silver.

This is just my 2 cents since you're doing this on a budget. My daughter is a competitive figure skater so I'm in the exact same boat as you when it comes to expenses.

@Nashorn101 is spot on for the flares. Sand them and hit them with Krylon Fusion and it will be good as new. You can also search on the forum for @Jerry Bransford 's advice to freshen them up with a heat gun and see his results.

I'd hold off on the bumpers and just get rid of the flotation devices attached to each side and replace with some flat end caps - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004TADG7Q/?tag=wranglerorg-20 It will look a lot cleaner and, IMHO, better.

Craigslist is your friend for wheels. You'll find a ton of rims on sale (depending on where you are and how far you're willing to travel) for a steal.

For a 4" lift on a SWB TJ you're going to have to start replacing a lot more than planned. As mentioned earlier, this will start to add to the costs quickly. Stick with a 2 - 2 1/2" lift (BDS or Old Man EMU) and you should be good to go without having to modify the driveline. Add in a 1" body lift and you'll easily clear 33" tires. My LJ sits on 255/85R16s (33x10) with the OME Heavy Duty springs and 1" BL.

So far everyone has solid advice! That's a great looking TJ minus those bullet holes, haha!

You'll want aftermarket rims with better backspacing in order to fit a 12.5" width tire.

Yes, so basically I have a 3" lift. Its perfect and isn't expensive at all. Thank you!

And ahhh ok now I understand. Yes I would be tempted to repaint the whole thing too!

If you're already leaning toward Zone Off road, take a close look at their combo lift, those who have that have been very satisfied how it works with 33" tires.

So just giving an update. Had some over heating problems so Radiator, water pump, thermostat, valve cover, exhaust manifold, and head gaskets have all been replaced (i tried everything i could not to rip the engine apart but i had no choice). Its being sanded for painting now going to start spraying fenders tonight. I thinking I'm going to go with a 2 1/2 suspension lift and 32 11.5 tires. There aren't a whole lot of good places in South Jersey that i will need anything bigger. and ill still get the aggressive look I'm going for.
