Fixing the 06 PCM before it goes bad?

They were making an Emulator to use the new Chrysler Micropod and use the new style computer on an older vehicle. But it didn't work, so I got to work on the old TJ with the giant black cube.....And manually load software and the data screen was 8 bit pretty much.
Where is that software coming from? Is it stored natively on the computer or is it pulling it from a server somewhere?

It was originally extracted from a known good pcm.

It is stored/available from the manufacturer. I am with GM now and all the updates are basically downloaded as used. They sort of don't want you to do updates unless "needed". With Chrysler it seemed it was downloaded and used as needed, not stored in the shops computers.

Mercedes wanted a reason for software update, it literally had a box that asked why I'm doing an update. I will say, I typed the some "interesting" things in that box when in a bad mood over the years, just to see if an engineer would be like "hey, knock it off buddy". Never happened though.

On my own vehicles, I have always just installed the updates where I worked. :geek:

Here is a trip down memory lane for you. I have almost 200 that we are testing, cleaning and listing.

I got involved with Mercedes for several years but just became too much of a pain. If Bosch numbers don’t match, you’re dead in the water. ME 9.7xxx. 🤯

Mercedes is the Most guarded manufacturer of anybody I have seen. Pretty much if you do not own a "Star Diagnostic" machine F-off! That's their answer, doesn't matter how old your car is. I'm sure I put several cars in the junk yard over those years with estimates.

The manual pcms are 949.00 while the
autos are 573.00

The manuals undergo a different series of testing and building. Tech time and scarcity of the pcm we currently use are two reasons why the price is different.

Man, I'm just thankful there are people out there like you who can help us to keep these things on the road.

Now can you imagine a 2020 JL and trying to keep that on the road 20 years after production ends? Seems like it would be even more complicated due to way more computers / electronics.

I’m slowly accumulating a spare parts bin, just for those things that aren’t as universal and I’d hate To need parts that aren’t available anymore. For me that includes things like a fuel pump assembly, radiator, etc.

this doesn’t seem to far out of the reasonable realm. though, for every bad pcm there’s probably hundreds of fine ones.
