Perfect example- put 87 in your tank for a long time and be prepared to hear a ticking noise. Then put a tank of high octane in it (91-93) and it goes away.
It burns off the garbage in low octane.
Wait, what? Are you saying 87 octane fuel is leaving deposits that "cause a noise" and higher octane "burns that off"?
If you are hearing a "ticking" (pinging) noise while running 87 but not with a higher octane, that's called pre-ignition. This is most evident under heavy load, such as fast acceleration or pulling a load. The higher the octane rating, the more resistant the fuel is to pre-ignition. Octane rating has nothing to do with fuel quality or cleanliness. Marketing labels of "regular" and "premium" are just that, marketing.
