That's awesome. I'd love to have done something like that but with lumber doing what it did when we were framing and interest rates doing their thing it just wasn't in the budget. I just went with a basic Carrier air source hp.

My wife and I were talking tonight about having to buy the new units. She was kinda grousing about it, and said she had hoped we'd get another few years before it needed to be replaced. I asked her if she would have wanted to replace a perfectly functional unit after a set amount of time...and she said no, probably not. Furnaces are a funny thing. Most of the time, dropping that much coin at once, I do a TON of research...Try to look at who the big names are, what the best value options are, etc. With the furnace, I kinda just asked the tech about what he would pick and why. I trusted him and his explanation and signed the line. He didn't tickle my bullshit meter. I didn't really have a choice...I know what I know, it was confirmed by the tech and it gets COLD here in Michigan. Better now, while its only getting into the 40's and 50's at night than I put some bubblegum repair on and it fails in the middle of January when it can get down to 10 or 15 below zero!
We ordered a 96% efficiency two stage with a variable speed blower. Having a tri-level (really a quad, if you count the basement) we have pretty high temp swings from our top floor (bedrooms) to our "garden Level" where the family room is. The family room is always too cold and the bedrooms are always too warm. The constant on of the blower at some level should help equalize the temps better. The other nice thing the tech said about the variable speed is that they can control the blower on delay a bit, so in the summer, they can kick the A/C compressor on, and delay the startup of the blower to really chill the evaporator down and control humidity. That is pretty nice sounding to me, as I can handle a little bit of heat, as long as its not humid!
Crazy expensive...but they will install it on Monday. The installation includes all the electrical work and a new pad for A/C, tin work on the ducting, a new cold air return in the basement to help with pulling cooler air into the A/C, etc. All in all, they're doing a lot of work and I'm not unhappy per se...but its definitely going to delay a couple jeep projects!

Got to go with your gut sometimes, especially if the ole bull shit meter stays in the good range. It is so easy to spend good money on bad decisions, how old was your unit?
