Gas mileage check

LOL Jeep TJ and good gas mileage. I have tracked every tank since I bought the jeep in 2004. 579 fill ups. 7137.02 gallons of fuel for 109,000 miles.

My rolling average is 11.54. Mostly lugging around town tothe mall. Even with 5.13 gears I disable the OD around town.

Submitted for your viewing pleasure is the last two years of my log.

I get a very generous vacation at my place of work..... I never have time to take it however. Finding employees in my field is very tight and has been for a number of years. I do actually get paid for 75% of the vacation time I can't take so that buys a few TJ/CJ parts.
Must be a really big Field if you cant find them

So my 15.5 to 16 average around town is ok then :) thanks

The Muddog is a 2002, 4.0 five speed. He gets 14 MPG city, and 12 MPG highway.
The first road trip I made, this really blew my mind. When I got back, I replaced plugs, O2 sensors, and eventually just about everything else my research told me might be causing bad mileage. After all that, my mileage was still lower than before my trip. It slowly got better, until it was back to 14 city.
The next year, I was confident my mileage would be better. Nope. Still 12 hwy.
I tried varying the speed I drove, OD or not, nothing helped.
I can deal with 14 in the city, and just won't go very far highway. But does ANYBODY have any ideas?

Drive slower. TJ has the aerodynamics of a brick.

Did you miss the part about varying the speed? I tried 60, 65, 70, and 75. No change.

Sorry I guess I did. My mileage was pretty good at 62 mph for a full tank going to AZ (14 mpg or so) . At 75 it was horrible (11 mpg or so).

I got better than my city with 62 and worse over 70.

I was also using the cruise control and alot of flat land between FL an AZ.

15.5 for me with 35s and 5.13 gears. Around town it drops to about 13.

If your range is ~240 miles on ~17 gal of fuel, city and/or hw - you are withing the average norm.

I have noticed that past 55mph, fuel consumption is roughly the same between 65 , 75 or 85.
I don't drive Jeep faster than 65 mph, so i had very little interest in establishing exact miles per gallon difference between speeds. What i would do during long road trips, is drive 120 miles at 65mph and other 120 at 75 or 85, and in the end i would still end up at my rough 240 range on 17 gallons.

I don't know what physical forces go on in front of a Jeep at highway speeds to explain this phenomena, but that is my observation.

For the sake of your own sanity, come to understanding that half of this 19mpg clowns are either full of shit or have their facts backwards. Other half have their Jeeps running on unicorn farts.
I understand the desire to go into "WTF?!" mode when someone claims 19mpg while your barely scraping the surface of 14.5mpg, but those miserable 14.5mpg is the norm... Matter of fact it is ignorant to claim 14.5mpg as average, since the actual fluctuation is 11 to 14 mpg. That is the reason why i despise retarded american system of mpg, while rest of the world uses liters per 100 km. It is simply dumb to keep track of every mpg instead of looking at your overall range or the average per so many miles.

In the end i will say this:
Two other cars that i drive is Toyota Tacoma (19 mpg) and Acura MDX (22.5 mpg). They consistently produce repeatable fuel consumption figures. In those cars i can lean back and drive them with a pinkie finger.
So when someone, who drives 18 year old square box, that gets blown off the road with every wind gust, comes around and claims as much of fuel efficiency as my two other cars, i simply turn off the computer and go do something else... cause the desire to "reality check" some people is sometimes hard to resist.

***********************************************************

As far as improvements:
1. Get a computer that hooks up to OBD port and observe your throttle position. Over the years of being as passenger, i have came to a conclusion that some people have no feel for things. They do too much of gas- no gas- gas- no gas- gas thing with pedal, and there is not a damn thing you can say for them to understand that it is a retarded way to drive a car. This may or may not be the way for you.

2. One time i had to replace O2 sensors 3 times in the row. Reason is one of them was defective, just as bad as the old one. Other two were kept going out due to a valve cover leaking oil, and that oil would make its way down the exhaust manifold and drip on the sensor.

3. Exhaust leak at the manifold. That leak confuses a computer, which will produce wide fluctuation between good fuel efficiency and very bad fuel consumption.

4. One person had issues with a bad cloackspring. For him, it was doing something that was messing with injectors. Something something, in other words if you have signs of misfire/ rough idle, that may be the case for you....

Holly efing shite, that was a lot... sowwi

My Ram 2500 Cummins gets 30% better MPG towing my TJ than the TJ gets on the highway. Never had a CJ, YJ, TJ, or XJ that had decent fuel mileage.

Mine is supposed to get 19 mpg highway. I wish.:(View attachment 206865
Bone Stock. Little tires. Brand new. I was sporting numbers like that way back when. I also get better mileage if I buy gas without ethanol. But the miles per dollar is actually worse. I have did all the business with trying to improve mileage. Sensors, O2, new Mpopar cats. But no joy. Here are the first numbers in my jeep log.

The only time I actually cared about my gas mileage, I filled up the tank 3 times and ran it until it ran out of gas. It was right around 323 miles of highway only driving. That was 17 Jeeps ago. Now I just enjoy my Jeeps and don't care, although my offroad MPGs really suck.

You are best to run any Gas car "Full' the evaporation is much less, My TJ never runs less than 3/4 of a tank! Around Town lol :)

I've gotten close to 16 mpg twice with 35's, manual trans and 4.10 gears. Both of those were driving 50-60 mph. 13ish is more normal. Its a Jeep and I dont expect good mileage but I also would do whatever I can to improve it.

12-13mpg when I usually check. I think I've had up to 15ish once. 2005 Sport 4.0L, NSG370 6spd, 4.11s, 32" rubber on 17" wheels. No lift.

Just got the lovely P0431code after a year or so of another O2 code coming and going. I'm replacing all 4 O2 sensors with NTK units and all cats with the Flowmaster units later this winter. Hopefully I'll get some mileage back and fewer orange lights on the dash.

4.0 NV3500 trans, 2.5" lift and 30" tires.

It's my DD for the moment and my commute is all back roads. Plenty of stops, and I never see fifth gear. I've been right at 16mpg.

The trick is to cruise at a constant speed as much as possible, regardless of what that speed is. Basically drive like it's a Semi with air brakes. Which means stay off the brakes unless absolutely necessary. I know my route well and if there was no other traffic to deal with I could probably hit 17mpg.

I have a stock '97 TJ 2.5L 5-spd (with 31" tires). The first tank I measured was 16 mpg, this was 100% city driving. This was after I did a full tune-up and changed out all fluids. However, I did have an SES light that I cured with a new full exhaust system (including cat and O2 sensors). I will measure my next tank and report back.
OK - I promised to report back.

Finally burned through another tank of gas...100% in town driving, 19 mpg.

Checked my math twice just to be sure.

Now, I drive the Jeep sedately...every shift between 2k - 2.5k rpm almost 100% of the time. Don't think I've ever taken it past 3k rpm. No need. Not gonna be accelerating quickly even if I did. LOL.

YMMV.

It's been a while since I have been on the forum, just a lot of things going on.

I am happy to report after all the work I did to the Jeep when I first got it last year, it has been running flawlessly. I've put over 1000 miles on it with zero issues.

My latest mpg measurement was 21.5 - all in town driving. I think the warmer weather we have been having recently has helped with the mpg.

It's been a lot of fun just bopping around town in the Jeep!
