2000 TJ, i need a motor, 2.5 litre, found one but transmission is standard, mine is automatic . is there a bushing kit to make it work ? or do i need to find a motor with automatic transmission ?

Are you looking to keep your automatic transmission? Or are you replacing that as well?
And are you keeping the 2.5 or attempting to swap a different engine?

I believe the big difference is in the PCM, rather than the engines themselves

keeping automatic, wanting to stay with 2.5 litre, it's for my wife....is there a bushing kit that makes it work, i don't think i can just install motor the way it is. i know i need to change flywheel.

The only time you have to worry about the pilot bushing is when you go from an automatic engine to a standard. If you are putting and engine from a standard to an automatic You do not have to worry about the pilot bushing. Just leave it in the engine and put the engine in

I removed my engine's pilot bearing and bushing when I converted from its OE 5-speed to an automatic but now that I think about it, it was unnecessary to do so as lostintime pointed out.

keep it a manual transmission for 2 reasons
1 better than auto
2 theft prevention (most ppl these days are to stupid or lazy to drive one)

it's for my wife. i know it will be gutless, but, she wanted automatic..if i was doing it for myself i would 4.0 litre stick. i have 3 YJ'S a 2.5 / a 4.0 / & a 5.7 chev with automatic, but now only 2WD...it never gets winter driven, we have big snow in Canada. plus a really nice 1992 Comanche 4.0 litre.

I know I am a bit late and have read through most of this thread. I am working on a 2002 Jeep Wrangler X. I bought it to fix up for some offroading and daily driving. My purchase was no closely looked at and ended up being a frame off with lots of frame repair. In the midst of the project the wife decided it should be automatic. So, I purchased a 2000 Jeep wrangler sport for the transmission. (Jeep was headed to the junk yard) Had the transmission rebuilt along with everything else. My problem is that when I started this project I read this thread and noted that all the connectors were there. Not true, the connections I needed for the lock up on the converter is not there nor does the Neutral safety switch connector match. Soooo I took the computer and the wiring harness out of the 2000 and put it in the 2002. Connectors match, but pin outs do not. Non of the gauges worked. Also had to change the TPS and all 02 sensors to match. ECM is throwing an 02 sensor error as well as non of the gauges working. So, now I have been looking for a 2002 harness for automatic transmission with no luck. If I could find a darn wiring diagram, I could modify the harness myself, but I have been unsuccessful at that as well. Can anyone help with one or all of the following. 2002 engine harness (sorry, 4.0l), ECM from an 2002 that was automatic or VIN to a 2002 jeep wrangler with automatic so that I can have mine re-flashed (not sure where yet). Wiring diagram would be huge. For both the 2000 and the 2002.
Sorry for being long winded, it has been a long project. FYI, the 2000 will be rebuilt after this one.
Sincere thanks in advance
Ron

You might reach out to @Wranglerfix regarding the ECM. They produce new ones for a variety of Jeeps

This was most likely a bus issue that is causing all of your problems. You had a 2002 TJ with the PCI bus and most likely you swapped early 2000 CCD bus parts into it. 2000 was a crossover year so very early 2000's (2000 MY but built in mid 1999) had some CCD bus ECM's and wiring. I ran into this problem years ago on a swap I was doing for a friends TJ and discovered that not always are breaks in ECM production or wiring exactly on a year-by-year basis. Later on in 2000 Jeep switched to PCI bus so the 2000 later and 2002 would have been similar however there's no guarantee that certain connectors and sensor plugs weren't changed, you have to look. No wonder all the headaches you're having as that is probably related to the bus and why the dash is "dead" with no gauge movement. Sorry it is not that simple as R & R the transmission, change the wiring stub change for NSS/TQ conv., remove the flywheel and add the flex plate with torque convertor my friend. Many don't realize the ECM communications bus is very important and that is why gauges, sensors and other parts are not interchanged easily over certain years of the TJ Wrangler. If you read any of my posts here on the forum about engine swaps, I have lots of links and information regarding this and why it's best to stay within the same communications bus system on TJ powertrain swaps.

You can fix all this but it would require swapping or changing lots of parts to get it to work and the main thing about that is you cannot go backwards in ECM control systems because of emissions controls. If you installed the 2000 ECM, dash & wiring with all it's sensors etc, it would run but you may not be able to get it smogged in an emissions control testing state or province depending on where you live. Here in California where the ECM is read "live" streaming on all 2001+ vehicles instead of run on a dyno, you would fail by virtue of a 2000 ECM in a 2002 vehicle.

Here is a link to a GENERAL SWAP GRID on MOPAR Trucks. This includes Jeep family vehicles as well. Keep in mind that there sometimes crossover production models that DO NOT follow the swap grid listed here on Hotwire Auto's web page. Namely early production built in the year before the MY listed on title and the VIN.

I have an early 1997 TJ that was built on March 3rd 1996, and I can tell you with absolute certainty the wiring harness that was in it prior to my V8 swap was very unique to other 1997 and later Jeep TJ Wranglers. Two-thirds of the sensor plugs were different than what was found on later production 1997 TJ's. Only the O2 sensor plugs were the same as other 1997-1999 TJ's and the Alternator wiring was the same as later TJ's. Fortunately JTEC ECM's pin-outs are all the same across all of the same bus ECM's so even the Dodge Ram ECM had the same ECM connectors with the same numeric pins on it. My 1998 had a lot more wiring in it from the factory for factory A/C, cruise control & chip-in -key security harness ready from the factory. My 1997 factory service manuals are full of glue or paste in TSB updated schematics and diagrams showing many of the changes from early to mid year.

RR,
I truly appreciate all of your input. I have a small fortion invested into this build so am determined to make it work. A few questions for you. What is meant by BUS, the connectors?
I am hoping that I an do one of the following.
Add the wiring required to the original harness for the Automatic Transmission and get the ECM re-flashed to use the automatic
Find an ECM and Harness from a 2002 Automatic
I have done lots of wiring and harness in my time but need a wiring diagram. Can't do much with out knowing the pin locations at the ECM.
The Jeep ran with the 2000 harness (with bank 1 upper throwing a code)
Would the ECM from a Cherokee work????? I am assuming there is a difference in the program from a 2002 Cherokee to a 2002 TJ????

I might mention that I have my V-8 CJ's (2ea) so really want this quite 6 cylinder plus is has been reworked to include some mild performance upgrades.
Any idea where I can get a wiring diagram
Thanks again
