Hardtop Repair or Replacement?

The tops are actually made of sheet molding compound (SMC).

For those that don't know: SMC is fiber-reinforced plastic. FRP is a general category that includes all kinds of composite materials that are formed from layers or matrices of fiber and polymer...so things like fiberglass, carbon fiber, and sheet-moulding compound are all in the same "FRP" family. Sheet-moulding is somewhat distinguished from other, similar materials by the way it's made and formed: it's literally a large sheet (or roll) of material that's cut to size, shaped, and then formed/cured. It's a pretty amazing process, but - as mentioned - it doesn't like to be repaired. I'm not an expert by any means, but I suspect that this is a byproduct of the way the parts are cured when they're initially made; whereas fiberglass is repair friendly, our hardtop material most certainly is not.
