hey everyone,

Has anyone had any experience with the Steinjager steering rack? Or any steering rack that doesn’t use traditional tie rods? How do they hold up over time, pros and cons?

If you’re talking about a true steering rack, I would think it would limit articulation dramatically.

Post a link to what you’re thinking about, please.

Junk, don't do it. Stay with the VERY well proven OEM inverted-Y steering system that doesn't screw up the steering geometry. If you actually want a beefier/bulletproof steering system upgrade that doesn't screw up the steering geometry that will cause bump steer, go with the Currectlync Heavy Duty Steering Kit from www.rockjock4x4.com.

I can't even picture how that works with a solid front axle with any flex at all. Unless you mounted the rack on the axle and then replaced the steering shaft and geartrain with hydraulics.

Oh wait.

Yeah, kinda where I was going with it too…morbid curiosity is making me ask what OP is referring to

I have helped some on some mud drag builds where we mounted a manual rack on the axle like a ram. They only work because the amount of suspension movement is limited enough that we could still make a steering shaft work.

Thank you guys for the information, I am looking to upgrade my steering rack and I’ll definitely look into this!

Ok...You keep saying steering rack. To quote the Princess Bride, "I do not think that word means what you think it means."

Our jeeps have a steering box, which is of the recirculating ball type. There is a pitman arm bolted to the box, which drives the Drag Link. The Drag link is connected to the Pass Side Knuckle, and the Tie Rod is connected to the draglink about 12" away from the Pass knuckle to pull the Drive side knuckle along with it. Its commonly refered to as "inverted Y" steering.

If you want to upgrade there are two methods. Get the factory replacement tie rod for a V8 Grand Cherokee (ZJ body), or buy the Rock Jock Currectlync. Stay away from anything marketed as One Ton steering or Cross-over.

Probably thinking of rack & pinion steering which to sports or race car drivers means more precise steering.

A lot of guys in my club run the Steinjager Linkage and really like it. I don't like the fact it has Heim joints and are exposed to the elements, mud, dust and so on. Heims are great on the race track, but don't last long off road.
I have one on my Track bar which had to be replaced due to it getting loose from wear.

I too would not recommend it, but to each there own.
