Heat shielding on battery cables

I just replaced the original battery cables with the ones from custombatterycables.com.

Do I need the black plastic wrap from the old cables, or is the rubber-type covering on the new cables sufficient?

That plastic wrap is called wire loom. It's there to help protect the wire from abrasion, rubbing etc. It's not for heat protection.
