Hello all. I have a 2004 Jeep unlimited 4.0. I just did the ball joints, u-joints in the front axle shafts, and the wheel hubs. Went to put the axle shafts back in and when I tighten the axle nut it is slightly backing out the axle shaft. So then when you turn the hub on one side the other hub doesn’t turn anymore like it should. The front driveshaft will turn but the opposite hub doesn’t turn. We’ve tried re-seating the axle shafts and nothing is working. Even put the old wheel hubs back on and it still does it. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong?

The axle shaft is tightened to the unit bearing (hub). The nut gets torqued to 175 ft/lbs. The unit bearing bolts to the knuckle with the three 13mm 12 point bolts at 75 ft/lbs. Your stock Dana 30 has an open carrier, so one wheel can spin while the other doesn't. The driveshaft will spin passively when in two wheel drive.
Thank you very much for the reply. I thought the same thing but one thing was confusing me. So when I removed the axle nut on the passenger side I wedged a 2x4 between the lug nut studs on the drivers side to prevent the passenger side axle shaft from spinning when removing the axle nut. So that is why I thought they turned together. Am i missing something? Thanks again, I really appreciate the help
