Hooked on Redline MT90

As some of you know I rebuilt and added a SYE to my 231J transfer case this weekend, but the same time I replaced the fluid in my manual transmission. I have heard people on this forum talk about Redline MT90, and I will tell you I am hooked.

I am not in the camp where fluid will ever fix a transmission issue. So I am not going to try and sell that here, but I will say I am betting that I will get some longevity in it. I drained what smelled like some kind of old gear oil. In the colder mornings I noticed it was harder to shift into first. I refilled the transmission with RedLine MT90. It was uncomfortably expensive, but it shifts great now. I doesn't grind downshifting into 2nd anymore and it doesn't grind upshifting into fifth anymore.

Don't get me wrong I don't think the fluid rebuilt my trans in any way, but maybe it being a little thinner was what was necessary. I still think it didn't fix anything, but I think it will let it last a little longer.

I wanted to share my experience with this product. I will stand behind it, and will always replace my TJ manual trans with this.

If you don't know what is in your manual transmission, replace it with this next time you wont be sad.

Royal Purple is probably good too, but I have no experience with that.

Massive fan of Redline gearbox oil. I was circuit racing a Lotus 7 replca with a Toyota engine and gearbox and the synchros were getting quite tired. The Redline got me through the rest of the season, whereas it was crunching into 3rd before the oil change.

I'm normally pretty cynical about this type of thing but not in this case.

What was the cost, if you don't mind my asking? I will be doing fluid changes in mine, as I'm certain the PO never did, and it's got 204,000 miles on it...

I believe I have a NV 3550, anyone know if this is what I should be putting in my transmission? That’s pretty cool about the stories of it actually fixing issues with transmissions. Mine has no problems, and my 04 rubicon has about 117k miles. So maybe if I start using it now and change it when it is needed it will help extend the life of the transmission

I don't believe it will fix anything, but I do think it will prolong the inevitable.

You probably can put this in your NV, but there may be something even better. I think what makes this good is it doesn't promote wear on the ax15 where the newer synthetic has been known to eat at the brass and soft parts, so I have heard.

Yea I was just reading something about that, GL-4 vs GL-5 or something like that haha GL-4 was supposed to not eat at the brass parts I believe

Redline MT-90 for the older AX-15 and AX-5 transmissions but Redline MTL for your newer NV3550 as well as the later NSG370. MTL is a GL4 gear lube just like MT-90 is, it just has a slightly lower viscosity that meets the requirement of NV3550 and NSG370.

Thanks for the clarification jerry, so what would you recommend? I saw a older thread where you said you didn’t like royal purple. Felt like it was a overpriced gimmick. I have never used royal purple so I don’t really have an option about them other than a lot of people seem to really follow the stuff. Should I try to find a GL5 so I’m replacing my fluid with what it needs according to the book? Or go with the redline that meets the requirements? I just want to used the one that will prolong the life of the tranny. And definitely not one that could damage it. Same question goes for the transfer case, but I’m guessing what I use for the tranny is what I should use for that as well right?

I did a fluid replacement on my NV3550 at the start of the year. I went from Penzoil Synchromesh to RP SynchroMAX. Big difference. Much smoother shifting and it doesn't make nearly as much noise. Believe it or not, I got the RP locally cheaper than the Redline MTL on Amazon.

Interesting, thanks for the information! Is RP sychroMAX considered a GL5?

I don't know about GL-4 or GL-5. I do know it satisfies the requirements of Mopar for the tranmission fluid for a NV3550. The spec is MS-9224.

I went with Jerry's recommendation when I changed my fluid in my NV3550. I bought the oil from Summit Racing @ $16.95/quart.
