How much oil does your TJ use between oil changes? Changed oil and filter today and the level had dropped from just below the full mark to about a third of the way above the low mark. The Jeep has a four banger with 90,000 miles. She gets Mobile 1 5W-30 and a NAPA Gold filter about every 5,000 miles. It seems that when the oil starts getting a little dirty, the level drops a bit faster and the gas mileage decreases slightly.

What's everyone else's experience?

Neither of my two TJ 4.0L engines have ever had an oil consumption problem. My previous 4.0L had 192k miles on it when it was stolen and it didn't use any oil, and my present 4.0L has about 90K on it and it doesn't either. The 2.5 is essentially the same as the 4.0L but with two fewer cylinders.

Thanks Jerry, I wonder what's up with mine, if anything. No smoke, no leaks and it runs great. Jeep engines are a modern marvel.

None, I have a rear main seal leak.... like every 4.0L has.... but I never have to add oil between oil changes. At 150K miles... I doubt I will ever fix that leak.

Never seen any increase in mpg after an oil change.

Haha... I got the rear main leak as well.

I've been meaning to fix mine, and I will soon. Not sure what it is with the 4.0, but they love rear main seals!

My 97 with the 2.5 and 120,000 miles doesn't burn/consume any oil at all, at least not a noticeable amount

My TJ (LJ) doesn't use any oil and it doesn't leak oil.:)

I checked mine earlier today and it hasn't burned or dripped out any oil since I last serviced it. Mine used to drip a bit of trans fluid from the radiator but I've fixed that. The only other spot for oil leaks on mine is the rear driveshaft pinion seal which I'll be replacing when the new seal arrives from the US
