Hurricane Dorian

If y’all aren’t going to leave town, get a permanent marker, put your name and birthdate on your stomach. Make it easier to ID your remains
Talked to my brother and his wife in Sarasota, as of this afternoon they are not going to evacuate. But he doesn’t have a generator so hopefully he won’t loose power. It’s still early though and alot can change. My prayers go out to whoever winds up being in harms way.
Not as compassionate as fox news Shemp Smith reporting on hurricane Mathew a couple years back....
I lived in FL on the east cost during that hurricane and it was pretty intense at Category 4 status but I did not quite experience anything like wheat he was describing. Good luck FL guys! Stay safe.
Seems like the Bahamas really got nailed. Hopefully this thing just sails out to sea so no one else gets hit. =/
I’m on the west coast of FL. I’ve been here for 35+ years. Old enough to have out grown the beach stuff and to come to despise the summer here but love the winter. Also being a snowbird does not work for my job. Owning two homes does not work for my retirement plans.
With the global warming so many of these hurricanes are turning into cat 4 and cat 5 killer storms. Seems like for us in FL and particularly those of us in the coasts of FL it’s just a matter of when not if our homes will be destroyed.
I have 8 more years until retirement. But I’m seriously thinking of getting out of here. Besides AZ though if I’m not having to worry about hurricanes I’d have to worry about tornados or earthquakes. I have no desire to live in a cold climate with snow.
Sounds shallow but I feel like I’m not so worried about surviving these storms but I have no desire at all to lose everything I own and fight with stinking insurance companies over a period of years to recover some of what I lost. I feel that there would kill me faster than the storm itself.
We in FL got lucky with Dorian. I feel really terrible for those in the Bahamas. Now we all regroup and try not to stress out too much until the next one. Hurry up and get here November.

Lived in Florida for 10 years and enjoyed it. I enjoyed the storms for the most part, so long as they weren't deadly. Florida seems to handle it pretty well. This storm isn't going to hit Florida now and it isn't strong enough to really cause a ton of damage. Fla got lucky this time around. The Bahamas are a mess however. Wow. 185mph winds and flooding took its toll and it sitting there for so long. Very unusual.
I’ve got to agree with you alot mde. I’ve lived in eastern NC for 47 years and been through a bunch of storms with only several big trees down and small tree damage. It wasn’t until Irene hit that we got water in the house and vehicles. Took us a year to get back into the house after a 2ft elevating and rebuild. Had to replace a lot of stuff and bought a whole home generator too. The weather is impacting everywhere in the US. Fires, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, sinkholes, droughts pick your poison. I’m too old to relocate now and for all it’s summer weather negatives I like living in a small town in the country. NC is a pretty gun friendly place too. I shoot off my deck regularly. Not like MD where I was born. Don’t know what to tell you other than to plan for the worst and pray for the best. Several years ago I had 33 trees cut off my property. I’m toying with the idea of elevating my barn as high as my house.

Sounds like you went through a lot. But love how your house and even the generator are built on elevation now. So I hope you never have any more flooding
NC is one of the places I’ve seriously considered. But it would have to be the western half of the state. Nowhere near the coast. Seriously considered buying a 1 acre plot of land somewhere and building a small 1000sf home, 3 car garage and at least two storage buildings.
Don’t need luxurious bedrooms or a big kitchen, but gotta have space for my Jeep and cars, lotsa tools, woodworking equipment etc.
Of course either the land would have to be a good chunk above sea level or everything would have to be built on elevation. And nowhere near a river
