Identify this spring?

This was in the bottom of my transmission. A previous owner installed a B&M short throw shifter, is this a spring from the OEM shifter that fell in?

That sure looks like a shift shaft detent spring.

The only other springs would be buried inside the transmission, and the PO wouldn't have had to go that deep to install a short shifter.

Well the transmission was supposedly rebuilt 3 years ago and I can believe it as there is evidence of RTV at the seams. I thought the spring looked like it came from the shifter though.
