Ignition switch actuator or.....

Friends,

At least a couple times a day when I go to start my Jeep, the engine won't turn over. All the usual dash lights come on but the starter won't engage. Then I turn the key back and forward a second time, and it starts.

My thinking is the ignition switch actuator is failing. So I picked up a Dorman replacement actuator. Should I also replace the ignition starter switch while Im in there? If the pot metal isn't cracked on the actuator, could it still be the culprit? It always starts the second attempt. Only once did I have to attempt it three times till I got the engine to turn. Btw, always fires right up when it does engage.

FYI-new battery, tight and clean terminals, all as of March. Been having this funny issue for a while, even before the new battery.

Any advice or info is appreciated.

I replaced both the actuator and the ignition switch at the same time when I was having starting issues. The additional cause was minimal so I thought made sense.

Have you had the starter bench tested? After all the various tests on mine, it ended up being a starter that had gone bad.

I was hoping I didn't need to test my starter. Not sure if its original, but Im willing to bet it is.

Testing the starter will be a very easy place to begin the diagnosis.

Valid point. I'll drop it and :EDIT HERE: I just read that I can bench test it at home, w my auto battery.
